Certain forum software maintainers feel that Like feature is not something we should have. While a few of them disregard it completely, some allow a Like system as extension.
For eg, phpBB is way ahead of its open source peers like MyBB, but they simply won't add a Like button by principle.
What do you think of this as a person who runs a forum ? Is Like an unavoidable feature ?
Abhi I don't think so, the Like System got popular due to the use of Social media and giving likes now become part of it. A simple thanks as reply with do more than the like i feel.
I personally loathe the like button. I much prefer upvote, where you can equally allow appreciation for something worthwhile reading rather than a picture of someone's dinner.
phenomlab I much prefer upvote,
Aren't both the same ? Different names, isn't it ?
admin not really. An upvote is essentially agreeing with a response for example. Think Stack Overflow
It is a way of saying thank you or appreciate it without actually saying it.
To be honest, where likes are available, people keep pestering about adding reactions . It is a much better way to appreciate a response.
Abhi it's what I use on my own forum
People like gifts, even if it is virtual.
Some projects are rude towards themselves. Possibly because those are extra work. But how hard it can be ? I suggested to a project to use responsive theme some time back. Someone from the team threw some theories about how responsive themes are useless and the project will never go with that. Now they are struggling because of that.
admin responsive themes are useless
Given that 80% of internet browsing is from mobile devices, this is an incredibly stupid statement to make. They deserve everything they get. It's almost like a retail outlet refusing to sell online.
Echoing my previous comment here https://admintech.flarum.cloud/d/266-mobile-access/4
phenomlab It's almost like a retail outlet refusing to sell online.
This is happening live here. I tried to convince a local shop to go online. He says it won't work here, only in cities there is scope for such a thing. That is when people around that shop is buying things from Amazon.
Some people are known for their strange theories. There is another theory in the forum world. " Don't expect Facebook features from us ". Which means, we won't add likes or notifications and so on.
Abhi I'm all for likes and reactions if they are used properly, and in line with the forum's structure. It's when you look at twitter profiles that are smothered in Emoji's that it really turns you off.
phenomlab Emoji's that it really turns you off.
Got that. No reactions or too much smilies.
I had them when people use it titles. Never been an emoji man when it comes to topic title.
admin yes, it's hard to convince someone that's the way forward. Admittedly, anything new is always going to be merry with trepidation, but the overheads (one of many benefits) are much less meaning higher profits.
I think people have " don't fix it if it is not broken " mentality. Also, there is a lack of understanding of the system that would come to work when they move to such advanced vendor techniques.
Abhi good points here.
