What do you look for in a forum that makes you want to join?
I always look at the community and how people interact with each other. If it seems like a friendly place, then I'm more likely to join.

The same here
Also, a good UI and UX. A better response time for page loading. No cluttered ads etc
I see how active they are, but not too “busy”. I don’t want to weed through hundreds of posts a day. Staff has to be available to moderate. I don’t want to see a bunch of spam posts. Members berating each other & it’s getting out of hand. Friendly is a definite must. The vibe has to be positive. They can’t have too many boards or too many apps going on at once. Another thing I look for is when the Staff welcomes & interacts with me. A bonus if others do too. I’ve joined groups & it’s like I’m just a number to them.
Yes, feeling like a "number" rather than a true part of the community is a big problem. I feel like there are many communities that, whether intentionally or not, view things through the lens of numbers and statistics rather than how well the community is getting along.
I completely agree that members make a community. I definitely take into consideration how active a forum is. The next thing I look at is the content. I like to see back and forth communication between members and well thought out posts without being too wordy.
What do you look for in regards to activity, Sharon? I like a forum that gets posts daily but isn't extremely busy. It makes it really hard to keep up with what's going on if the forum is getting thousands of new posts per day.
