Since I'm not good at themes, I have to use from our Proboards Library. I'm honestly not good at the bells & whistles. I prefer writing over talking so incorporate that into my forum. There's also something to be said about being overly done. To me, if a forum is too busy looking (not the activity, but popups, colors), I feel they are trying to overcompensate for something else. I tend to avoid forums where the themes are "loud".
To be honest, no. I like simple but professional looking themes.

I agree with you. Mostly, that will be the case.

I like it when people do it on a minimal scale
Too much flashy is not a good thing. If this is not a webmaster forum, there is a good chance that we wouldn't even have these Christmas or New Year decorations.
The reason why they are here and much before the celebration is that people can understand they can do fun things with their website this holidays. And can ask our help to do the same on their website if they want to.
I don't care much for fancy themes. As long as it doesn't look horrible, then a theme alone won't deter me from joining a site. After all, it's the content that matters.
I like some sophistication to sites when it fits what the board is about but too fancy often means something I can't tolerate for long. Think eye fatigue.
